The name METAR is commonly believed to have its origins in the French phrase message d’ observation meteorologique pour l’aviation reguliere ("Aviation routine weather observation message" or "report") and would therefore be a contraction of METorologique Aviation Reguliere. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lays down the definition in its publication the Aeronautical Information Manual as aviation routine weather report.
